SHINGLE SPRINGS — People for Animal Welfare in El Dorado County (PAWED) hosted over 165 enthusiastic Animal Shelter supporters on Feb. 23 to celebrate the start of construction at the new El Dorado County Animal Services Facility. Guests to the invitation-only event had a chance to preview plans for interior renovation and details of features that will create a functional, efficient Animal Services facility, built to current standards.
PAWED’s President Charlene Welty said, “The guests were clearly excited at the prospect of adequate space and safe, healthy, pleasant quarters for homeless and abandoned companion animals that will be temporarily housed here, until reunited with their owners or adopted to new permanent homes. It’s wonderful to celebrate the first permanent animal shelter on the West Slope of El Dorado County.”
El Dorado County purchased the 21,000-square-foot industrial building and its surrounding 4.5 acres on Capitol Avenue in Diamond Springs last July for the future home of Animal Services. In subsequent months, plans were completed for the building’s interior renovation and the project was put out to bid. Bids were well within budget and at the Feb. 25 El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting, a contract was issued to D. G. Granade of Shingle Springs. Project managers expect construction to be underway on March 17.
With the long-held goal of a permanent county shelter now a certainty, PAWED also announced the launch of its “Finishing Touches Campaign.” The group’s appeal will raise funds for specialty equipment items and key exterior features to enhance the county funded project and provide donors with special recognition methods, including naming opportunities for important public spaces and prominent major donor recognition in the facility.
