A traffic collision in South Lake Tahoe proved fatal on Feb. 22.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department responded to a traffic collision at 6:45 p.m. in front of the Taco Bell at 2681 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. On scene, officers found a 51-year-old male pedestrian unconscious, lying in the roadway.
CPR was performed until SLT Fire and Ambulance personnel arrived and took over treatment. The man was transported to Barton Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. His identification is being held pending notification of next of kin.
Gregory Stearns, 49, of South Lake Tahoe, was determined to be the driver of the vehicle. He was allegedly found to be driving on a suspended license from a prior DUI conviction. He was arrested for alleged DUI and driving on a suspended license. While the cause of the collision is still under investigation, initial findings are that the pedestrian was crossing the road outside of a crosswalk, wearing dark clothing on an unlit portion of the road and failed to yield to oncoming traffic. The pedestrian, who has a history of public intoxication with SLTPD, may have also been intoxicated.
