Pinewood Elementary School in Pollock Pines scored among the top 100 schools across the country in the Safeway & Scrip’s 10 percent Back to School Program.
Pinewood earned over $4,600 by having family, friends, and local Safeway shoppers redeem codes from Safeway receipts during the redemption period last year.
Because Pinewood was in the Top 100 schools in the nation, they also received a bonus of $1,000.
“I was so excited when I received the email letting us know we were in the top 100,” said Rita Ferdon, a member of the Pinewood Parent Teacher Club. “It’s an incredible accomplishment for a small rural school.”
According to Principal Brent Malicote, the money will be used for field trips, classroom technology upgrades, and for art and music programs. “This money helps fill in those gaps,” he said.
More than 35,5000 schools throughout the country participated in the program to help offset budget cuts at their school site.
