Two loud explosions were heard by neighbors who came out of their homes to see a house at 874 Green St. in Placerville fully engulfed in flames Wednesday afternoon.

A 26-year-old woman who was at the home alone with the family's two dogs managed to escape with the pets, one of which wandered lost and scared for about half an hour after the 3:30 p.m. fire broke out.

Amy Clark said her mom Melisa and her two brothers were not home at the time. Melisa, manager of the Placerville Food Co-op on Placerville Drive, arrived shortly before 4 p.m. and gave her daughter a big hug.

Amy told her mom that "something exploded on the deck" and then the house went up in flames.

Neighbor Debi Bacon, 50, said she heard two loud booms and thought someone was knocking on her door, kitty-corner and just a few yards from the Clark residence.

"I opened up the door and saw that the deck was on fire, then the whole house was on fire," said a visibly shaken Bacon. "Amy brought one of her dogs to my house, to keep it inside and away from the fire and firemen," she added.

Fire crews from El Dorado County, Cal Fire and other agencies were quick to respond, but the structure appeared to be a hopeless cause as the flames licked the red-colored two-story wooden house.

Amy Clark wandered about in the company of a fireman, searching for the missing dog, Toby. A leash hung from her hand as the young woman searched the area, shock written on her face. A happy reunion occurred a few moments later as Toby made his way back to his mistress' arms.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
