Planning Commissioners sworn in

When George Lowry was running for Placerville City Council in November, he vowed to stay involved in the city, no matter what. Lowry lost his bid for the council seat, but on March 5, Lowry and Michael Drobesh were sworn in to their four-year appointments as Placerville Planning Commissioners.

Lowry, 59, has lived with his wife Jan, a psychiatric technician, in El Dorado County since 1993.  ”It was the best place to raise a family,” said Lowry. He is assistant chief of telecommunications for the California Emergency Management Agency, and with 24 years of civil service and project management experience, he said he knows how to get people to cooperate and collaborate.

“I wanted to be in service to the community in a way that was also challenging for me,” said Lowry, of his application to the Planning Commission. “There is a steep learning curve and I like that, and there can be some wonky elements to it — details that need some historical knowledge of the town. I like that too.”

Lowry is looking forward to learning more about Placerville through his term as Planning Commissioner. “My job is to implement the vision that city council understands the public desires. I’m not planning to develop new policy and procedures.”

He believes the Planning Commission owes an applicant the courtesy to be briefed enough on the application to make decisions on a one-time basis. “I’m unhappy when process mitigates against progress,” he said. “I don’t want to be that guy who jerks people around.”

Lowry said he’s good at research and very analytical and willing to do the work involved in being a Commissioner. “I’m more interested in fact than opinion and I want to look at how other cities do things — not to slavishly follow them, but to have ideas. When the money faucet turns on as the economy turns around, it’s going to get rough and ready.”

The article's "plural" word made me think there would be "plural" coverage!
