A new adjunct or part-time faculty award at American River College has been named for Georgetown Gazette and Mountain Democrat columnist and retired Associate Professor Ken Deibert of Garden Valley. The award’s full name is the Ken Deibert Adjunct Faculty of the Year Award.
ARC President David Viar said, “Because of his tireless efforts, the new annual American River College Adjunct Professor of the Year award is named for Ken Deibert.”
Deibert was on the Design Technology faculty for more than 20 years and served on the academic senate for more than 10 years. Associate Professor Gary Aguilar of Coloma was thanked by Deibert for completing details of the work on recognition of the adjunct professor of the year honor, after the latter’s retirement last year.
While awards for full-time faculty have been in effect since Deibert started his work at ARC 25 years ago, part-time faculty awards were not.
“The American River Adjunct Faculty of the Year award was my pet project for years when I served on the American River College Academic Senate,” said Deibert. “I served for some years with Coloma resident (Aguilar) at Academic Senate. He and I steered a new honor for part-time or adjunct faculty through the process. Regrettably, I left teaching this time last year, (but he maintained contact with Aguilar).”
In an e-mail last December, Aguilar wrote Deibert to tell him that the award would be named the Ken Deibert Adjunct Faculty of the Year Award. Although Deibert no longer teaches at ARC, the award will carry his name in perpetuity. The first award was presented Jan. 13 at ARC in Sacramento to counselor Barbara Westre. Along with the honor, the winner gets $500 and a gift basket with ARC items from the bookstore.
American River College boasts the second largest student population in the California Community College System. The academic senate is the part of “shared governance” that represents the ARC faculty in its role in business with Los Rios Community College District and the ARC main campus management.
