A reward is being offered for information pertaining to a horse found dead in the Jayhawk Cemetery in Rescue on Jan. 30 between 2 and 5:30 a.m.
There was no conclusive evidence to determine how the horse — a 35-year-old gelding named Trumpet, according to reward flyers — was able to get out of its stall and into the cemetery, according to the official report, said El Dorado County Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Becker. No damage was found to the fence or gates housing the horse.
It is unknown how the horse received its injuries, though it was impaled on a pointed rod fence — possibly self-inflicted. “Blood and hair were observed on the pointed rod iron tips and tracks were observed on both sides of the rod iron fence,” Becker said.
A horse blanket was also found in the cemetery, with no damage to the blanket or buckles that held the blanket to the horse. It is unknown how the blanket became separated from the horse.
The owners — who wish to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation — believe that the horse may have been stolen and killed. A memorial at the cemetery features a poster centerpiece offering a $5,000 reward for any information regarding the death of Trumpet.

This story keeps changing. I read from another source that the horse was horsenapped and maliciously slaughtered as some kind of retribution. Someone needs to call Robert Stack (I think he isn't returning phone calls) and get Unsolved Mysteries on the case.

Just how far from Ray Nutting's ranch did this occur? It wasn't too long ago that Ray was bragging around town how he had clubbed one of his own horse's to death.
