A man is dead after a single-car accident near Red Hawk Casino in Shingle Springs on Friday morning.
Laura Duggins, 25, was driving her 1996 white Toyota Corolla eastbound on Highway 50 just east of Red Hawk Casino at 11:05 a.m. when she began drifting into the center median, said California Highway Patrol Officer Quinn Cuthbertson. She overcorrected, swerved across all lanes, began spinning and hit an embankment on the south side of the highway, on the right shoulder, said CHP Officer Dan Stark. The car overturned and came to a rest in the right-most lane.
Vincent Rapolla, 19, a passenger in the rear of the car who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected from the car and sustained fatal injuries. Duggins, who was later confirmed to be pregnant, was taken by air ambulance to Mercy San Juan Hospital. She sustained facial injuries but was to be released April 30 or May 1, Cuthbertson said. Ashley Valdez, in the front passenger seat, received moderate wounds and was taken to UC Davis Medical Center by ground ambulance.
