Two men, one believed to be from Placerville, died in a shooting in Sacramento on Monday, Dec. 31.
Sacramento Police Department officers responded to the sound of gunshots in the 1000 block of 2nd Street, at the intersection of K Street and 2nd Street, according to SPD. An argument had turned physical and an employee attempted to break up the fight. A male suspect then fired a gun at the subjects he was fighting with.
Officers found five people with gunshot wounds. The employee who attempted to break up the fight, believed to be Daniel Ferrier, 36, of Placerville, and Gabriel Cordova, 35, were pronounced dead at the scene. Official sources had not returned calls to confirm the identities as of press time. A 30-year-old female sustained non-life-threatening wounds. A security guard who had confronted the suspect and exchanged gunfire with the suspect had also sustained gunshot wounds; the suspect was also shot in the exchange.
The armed suspect attempted to flee towards crowded city streets despite his wounds, but was immediately taken into custody. Both the suspect and the security guard were transported to local hospitals.
The 22-year-old suspect, identified as Carlito Montoya, remains in custody while being treated at the hospital for multiple gunshot wounds.
The Sacramento PD’s Homicide and Crime Scene Investigations Units investigated the scene. Two guns were recovered and the units are following up with witnesses.

I did not have the pleasure of knowing Daniel, however my son knew Daniel and he told me what a good person he was. I decided to visit Daniel's FB page and was so amazed at all the wonderful things that his friends had posted about him. To my surprise, some of Daniel's FB friends are people that I know, many of them El Dorado High grads. The one thing that I got out of this was learning that this young man was a person who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. His death is so tragic, however I believe his legacy will live on through all the people who love him. I have always been a person who pays it forward, whether is through a kindness or just giving someone a helping hand. I think that we all can learn by the way Daniel Ferrier chose to live his life. I wish I had known him. God Bless.
