The California State Senate Rules Committee has announced the appointment of  Georgetown physician Alexis Lieser, 36, to the California State Commission on Emergency Medical Services.

Lieser is an emergency physician and director of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at Marshall’s Medical Center in Placerville where she has worked since 2010.

Nominated for the position by the California American College of Emergency Physicians, Lieser is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, California American College of Emergency Physicians, California Medical Association, and the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Association.

The commission’s job is to review and approve regulations, standards and guidelines to be developed by the Emergency Medical Service Authority; advise the authority on development of an emergency medical data collection system; advise the director concerning assessment of emergency facilities and services and on the components of an emergency medical services system; and make recommendations for further development and future directions of the emergency medical service system in the state.

Lieser said her first commission meeting will be on March 19 in Los Angeles. According to Lieser, one of the biggest issues they have to tackle is the “scope of practice” of emergency medical technicians and paramedics and what they are allowed to do.

“They have to make a lot of judgment calls,” she noted, and said their ability to make treatment decisions is particularly important in a county like El Dorado where there are often long transport times.

“We do a really good job here,” saying she has previous experience working with EMS personnel in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Sacramento and those in El Dorado County are very well-trained.

Resources are another issue the commission has to deal with it. “With property taxes dropping, it really hit the EMS system pretty hard,” she said. “When you call 911 you want coverage. Jobs are pretty tight right now and salaries have been cut. But we want to keep good people.”

Lieser’s educational and work background includes a degree in biochemistry and employment as a scientist for Pfizer, Gen-Probe, and the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department. She said she got into the medical field because, “it was the best way to use my ability to communicate with people and to do something that would serve the community. And I have always had an interest in medicine.”

She said she especially enjoys the challenge of being an emergency room doctor.

“You have to be mentally there when on duty. I like that part of it. You have to be a leader but also have the ability to interact with people because you only have a few minutes to engage people and get them to trust you. You also have to like controlled chaos and to make decisions quickly. It’s a challenging but rewarding job.”

Aside from a heavy work schedule, Lieser also takes out time for hobbies including snowboarding, hiking, fishing, and anything having to do with the outdoors. The physician now lives on the same property in Georgetown that she grew up on.
