Hello Phil- The property is not private, it remains public and is managed by the Central California Area Office (CCAO). EID only operates the park and facilities.

Yes, as referenced at manta.com, “El Dorado Irrigation District in Pollock Pines, CA is a private company…”. What is a private company doing operating public lands? Isn’t that what the government is for? We have found that public lands are placed under the control of private corporations who then charge fees for their use. It is unconstitutional to force the public to pay fees for public land use but they have been sneaking these fees in under the guise that they are needed for many years. The fees start out so small that they are generally accepted and then incrementally increased over the years. The people have had enough and are beginning to use the land at their liberty.

EID is a corporation that has it’s operating budget 100% paid by credit. Not one dollar of park fees goes towards any service but sure does line pockets. All public parks and lands are to have free access to the public and the people are now learning how to lawfully exercise the right of use. Another point- It’s also an option to drink water from another source if the thought of urine is that bothersome even though it is a sterile substance and of no harm. I’d would be more thoughtful of the gas and oil from the boats but ant ill-effects from them are so minute they are not reaching home owner’s supplies.

As a teenager I swam & water skied in the formerly unregulated people friendly Sly Park waters. Actually, before that I had learned to swim in a reservoir that served as a primary water source for dairy cows (‘nuf said!!!). Lots of family and friends did likewise. Perhaps we can be reassured by the fact that sunlight remains the best disinfectant. Nature hasn’t changed in the interim.

Gotta love it when people have to be rude like whitehead65 and SH ($nithead?)! As far as the water quality goes, I am on a well, so my concern is for the community at large. Yes, I know there are other animals that crap there, but I prefer not to have even more. It is a choice to go to the lake. Not having you there sounds like it is for the best. Too expensive? How much do you pay for internet a month? I am sure it is more than the $10 per month it costs for the Lake pass ($120 a year). If you don’t like it, take it up with the state. It is only EID’s responsibility to enforce the regulation. Do you want to lose the revenue generated by the lake? Part of its popularity is because you can swim in it. We do not go in the summer very often, but Sept through May it is mighty nice.

I agree with Cheryl and whitehall. It’s only a few minutes from my house but I don’t go because its too expensive and I can’t bring my dogs – and my dogs hate the water so they wouldn’t even swim in it, they just want to be with us. And they charge a ridiculous amount even if you aren’t using the lake. You don’t want to drink dog crap, Darrin? Fine, drink the piss of every drunken valley punk who goes boating out there. Enjoy that.

SlyPark=Flatlander Central as evident by some of the comments posted here. Sly Park has ducks, geese, chipmonks, deer, mountain lions and the occasional bear defecating near or in the water. Combine that with 1/2 million drunk flatlanders urinating in that lake. However, dogs are to blame for the water quality-right. Yes, high standards for drinking water brought to you by EID-Enjoy your water Darrin.

Personally,I love Sly Park…it IS a jewel.
That said, Sly Park fees don’t cover its debt service and overhead costs…only its direct operating costs… and Ms. Carlton’s assertion simply is not true. Instead, EID’s recreational facilities annually cost EID water ratepayers an extra half million in rates.

WHY NO DOGS IN THE WATER

In 2003, El Dorado Irrigation District purchased Jenkinson Lake from USBR. This change also transferred oversight of the lake from Federal to State authority. The State of California does not allow body contact in drinking water reservoirs. Jenkinson Lake is one of the approximately six (6) drinking water reservoirs with a legislative exemption from the no body contact regulation. When the legislation was passed allowing body contact to continue at Jenkinson Lake legislative conditions were imposed. The conditions were:

1.provide fencing and buoys at the second dam to protect the drinking water intake
2.no domestic animals in the water
3.no diapers in the water
Allowing violations of these conditions could result in the revocation of the no body contact exemption. “No body contact” is defined as no wading, swimming, or boating (kayaks, rafts, fishing boats, etc.) of any kind for people.

@Cheryl, I find the lake to be quite a bargain for us. We purchase a pass each year and enjoy it most of the year except when it is too busy in the summer. As far as dogs go, it applies to ALL DOMESTIC ANIMALS and I personally do not want to drink dog crap, thanks. If the park does not enforce the No Dogs, the lake could become a no body contact reservoir like most other lakes in CA. EID takes excellent care of the lake, so yes, you have to pay use fees, but that helps keep the lake in good shape.

Jenkinson Lake is not user friendly for locals. They charge $6 a dog and then won’t let them swim, but boats & people peeing is OK. How stupid! Tried to take someout of town friends to see lake because they wanted to take their trailer there and they made me pay $10 for being there 15 minutes to promote THEIR lake. So many other places to go that don’t rip you off.
