Four inches of snow on Echo Summit Monday morning delayed by a day the Wagon Train's departure from the Amacker Ranch in Meyers. Chain controls were in effect Monday over the summit. The Wagon Train traversed Echo Summit Tuesday.

The total snowfall recorded by Caltrans at Echo Summit this year adds up to 572 inches.

Rainfall at the Mountain Democrat totaled 1.46 inches from Saturday and overnight Sunday through Monday morning. Rainfall for the month of June now totals 1.71 inches compared to the 137-year average of 0.5 inch for this month. The season total so far stands at 49.39 inches, which is 124.69 percent above the average of 39.61 inches for the rain season that ends June 30.

The Wagon Train was due to arrive at Strawberry and stay there all day Tuesday, proceeding to Fresh Pond Wednesday.

The layover day at Fresh Pond has been canceled, according to longtime Wagon Train participant Davey Wiser. Wiser said it snowed in Meyers Monday but didn't stick to the ground.

Canceling the layover keeps everything on schedule for Friday and Saturday. Fresh Pond, now an overnight stop, includes a public barbecue and other activities.

Friday the Wagon Train is due in Pollock Pines around mid-morning and then on to High Hill Ranch in Camino for cowboy poetry, music by the Stardust Cowboys and a barbecue.

Saturday the Wagon Train arrives in Placerville for festivities on Broadway, then a parade down Main Street, with the Wells Fargo Stagecoach joining. More activities are planned downtown and then it winds up at the County Fair Shopping Center with live music, bull riding, a Ferris wheel and, of course, a barbecue.

The land of marriage has this peculiarity: that strangers are desirous of inhabiting it, while its natural inhabitants would willingly be banished from it.... Pleasure itself is painful at the bottom....
