Jorge Luis Ponce Barajas, 40, was arrested on a no bail warrant in Richmond, a press release from the Placerville Police Department stated. The warrant had been issued in 1992. He was arrested by Richmond Police Department at 261 South 13th Street.
The warrant was issued concerning the alleged murder of Inez Castaneda, then 23, who was shot and killed in the 3000 block of Airport Road in Placerville. PPD suspected that Barajas fled to Mexico shortly after the murder.
“Older cases such as these present inherent challenges. That said, I trust justice will prevail, albeit 22 years after this tragic incident occurred,” PPD Chief Scott Heller said. “We will be working closely with the District Attorney’s Office to achieve a successful prosecution in this case.”
Barajas is currently in custody in the El Dorado County Jail on charges of murder, illegal entry and domestic violence. Anyone with further information regarding the case is asked to contact Det. Ron Cannon at 530-642-5210.
