El Dorado County Animal Services received two reports of mountain lion sightings in South Lake Tahoe the week of April 15.

Both sightings were in a meadow in the area of Black Bart Avenue and Al Tahoe Boulevard, a press release stated.

The first was reported around 2 p.m. on April 16, when a mountain lion was seen walking across the meadow towards Lake Tahoe Community College from a South Tahoe Public Utility District Building.

A mountain lion was then seen around 4:30 p.m. on April 18. An individual walking their dogs saw the mountain lion lying in the same meadow about 60 yards away.

The mountain lion did not approach either the individuals reporting.

“In both instances, the mountain lion appeared to be calm and did not exhibit any aggressive behavior,” said Lt. Robert Gerat, Supervising Animal Services officer. “But since the sightings were reported in a populated area, we wanted to inform the community and remind them to be alert to their surroundings.”

The Department of Fish and Game’s recommendations on mountain lion encounters are as follows: Do not hike, bike or jog alone. Instead, go in groups and have adults supervising any children, and do not leave small children or pets outside unattended. Mountain lions are most active during dawn, dusk and at night. Avoid hiking or jogging during those times. Do not approach a mountain lion; if one approaches you do not run. Instead, face the animal and make noise. Try to look bigger by waving your arms or other objects. If this does not scare the mountain lion off and it attacks, fight back. If a mountain lion attacks anyone, call 911 immediately. More tips can be found at dfg.ca.gov/keepmewild/lion.html.

Sightings should be reported to El Dorado County Animal Services. For sightings in South Lake Tahoe, call 530-573-7925; Placerville at 530-621-5795; El Dorado Hills at 916- 358-3555 ext. 5795. For emergencies, call 911.
