Nov. 19, 1951 — June 9, 2013
Conrad Benjamin Montgomery passed away on June 9, 2013. He was born in Pittsburg, Kan. He was his older brother Monty’s 13th birthday present. He spent his youth in the Susanville, Calif., area (Herlong, Janesville and Susanville). He graduated from Lassen High School. His Bachelor’s Degree was earned at California State University at Chico (1973) and his Master’s in Public Administration is from Golden Gate University of San Francisco (1981).
Conrad enjoyed working in city and county planning and community development. He worked for the cities of Santa Maria (1974-1977), Lompoc (1978-1979), Placerville (1979-1998) and Livermore (2003-2006) and the counties of El Dorado (1995-2003), Modoc (2006-2007) and Lassen (2007-2008). He was proud of being awarded Planning Director Emeritus by the California County Planning Directors Association in 2009. He was a member of Rotary of El Dorado Hills and Rotary of Livermore. His final Director of Community Development position was back in Lassen County and he would joke about his life coming full circle. He retired to Reno, Nev., in December of 2008, but spent as much time as possible at Eagle Lake of Susanville.
Conrad’s other roles of husband, father, brother and grandfather also gave him great joy and happiness. His passions were his family, fishing, music, more music, concerts, canoeing, boating, long distance bicycle riding, the gym, laughing, the 49ers and Eagle Lake.
Conrad is survived by his wife, Nancy Held of Reno; his daughter, Megan Fullerton (Robert) of Seattle/Norfolk; his daughter, Kira Montgomery of Placerville; his first wife, Adele Montgomery of Placerville; his step-children, JayJay Lowden (Jeffrey) and Mark Held (Rachel) of Reno; his grandchildren, Rennan and Chase Fullerton, Melody, Jessica Joy and Luke Lowden and Anika and Turik Patrick Held; his brother, William “Monty” Montgomery (Bev) of Tracy, Calif.; his sister, Patricia Crocket (Buck) of Reno; his step-brothers, David Crandall (Pam) and Michael Crandall of Chico, Calif.; and his step-sister, Kim Bruce of Oakland, Calif.
If there was an award for the nicest man in the world, Conrad would have been awarded it. His final words of advice to his family and friends would be, “Enjoy your life and go Niners!”
