Evaletta Brown

Jan. 28, 1925 — Oct. 22, 2012

Evaletta Bernice Brown was born Jan. 28, 1925, to Carl and Augusta (Opkis) Buskirk in rural Holt County near O’Neill, Neb. She passed away Oct. 22, 2012, at the home of her brother, Vernon Buskirk and his wife, Evelyn in Placerville, Calif.

Evaletta grew up in the Midwest and wrote in a journal about her childhood, how she would ride a horse to school when available. When not, she walked. On Feb. 10, 1946, she married Lee Paul Brown and together they worked a farm as sharecroppers near Chimney Rock along the Oregon Trail near Bayard, Neb. Plowing fields while pregnant was normal for a farmer’s wife then, and so was living in a house with dirt floors and no indoor plumbing.

The Browns moved to El Dorado County in 1959. There Evaletta was known for the beautiful quilts she made for her family. A volunteer with the Marshall Hospital Auxiliary for more than 30 years, she also worked seasonally for 14 years at Kids Inc., in Apple Hill, making delicious apple pies.

Preceded in death by her husband, Lee Paul and son, Larry Lee, Evaletta is survived by her sons, Raymond Gene of El Dorado, Calif., and Gary Dean and Randy Ray of Placerville, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren (with another on the way).

A memorial service for Evaletta was held at the Placerville Church of Christ on Oct. 27, where she had been a member for 50 years. She was a wonderful woman who ended her sentences with a smile, and she will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
