Gwendolyn Marie Block Veerkamp, 89, departed this life on July 3, 2012. Gwendolyn was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Woodbine, Kansas, to Horace and Grace Block. She, her mother and sister moved to California in 1936. In 1938 she met Quincy Glenn Veerkamp and they were married in Minden, Nev., on June 19, 1938. Quincy passed away Dec. 17, 1982. Quincy and Gwen resided in Rescue since 1945.
Gwen enjoyed a career as postal clerk at the Rescue Post Office for 22 years, retiring in 1986. She always enjoyed music and spent many happy hours playing her guitar and singing. She was also an excellent seamstress.
Gwen is survived by her two daughters, Carole Stevens (Joseph) of New York and Barbara Coulson (Rich) of Montana; one grandson, Thomas Thompson (Sandra); and two great-granddaughters, Rhiannon and Sara Thompson, all of Maryland. Other survivors include nephews, Wayne Dawson (Jennnifer), Melvin Marden (Darlene), Bill Marden (Helen), David Marden, Rob Dawson (Debbie), Bill Marden Jr., Bert Marden, Scott Dawson (Kim) and Johnny Connor; beloved nieces, Lois Dawson, Ann Barber, Anna Connor, Pearl Butler, Eileen Ansted, Alice Soracco (Peter), Cheryl Marden, Marlaine Butts (J.R.), Nola Rumsey (Nick), and Laura Barber; and many other great-nieces and great-nephews.
IT was Gwen’s request that there be no funeral or graveside services for her. She will rest beside Quincy, her husband of 44 years, at Jayhawk Cemetery in Rescue. Any who wish to do so may honor her with a memorial gift to the Rescue Fire Protection District at 5221 Deer Valley Road, Rescue, CA 95672.
