March 26, 1951 — June 15, 2012
Karen Susan Ness, aka “Special ‘K’,” passed away on June 15, 2012, after a brief but valiant battle from Pancreatic Cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends. Karen was born in Oakland, Calif., and graduated from Castro Valley High in 1969. She began her working career at Oak Creek Ranch, attending to the care of special needs children. In 1978 she moved to Bend, Ore., and worked at Munchkin Manor and Moonlight Mailing Service.
In 2002 both of her parents became ill with dementia. Setting aside all her personal plans, Karen moved to Placerville to care for both of them in their time of need. Her beloved father, Charles “Charlie,” passed away from this terrible disease in 2003. Karen stayed to care for her mother, Katherine “Liz” (Yost), until she passed away in 2006. Staying in Placerville, Karen worked for the Mother Lode School District and Helping Hands Care services until she became too sick to continue.
She is survived by her older brother, James, and his wife, Nancy; and her younger brother, Kevin, and his wife, Cheryl. Also surviving her are many nieces, nephews, grandnephews and grandnieces. Karen’s acerbic wit and banter will be missed by all her tattooed brothers and sisters. She was a free spirit who believed in living life “her” way and will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
