Robert Barnes

Sept. 5, 1929 — Jan. 26, 2012

Robert D. Barnes passed away Jan. 26, 2012, with his family by his side at home. He was born to Helene Holden Barnes and Lowell Barnes on Sept. 5, 1929, in Lodi, Calif.

Bob attended College of the Pacific, where he met his future wife, Lucy. They were married July 1, 1951. He fulfilled his biggest ambition to become a pilot in May 1950, when he became a United States Air Force Cadet. He graduated as an officer and his service included a tour of duty in the Korean War. In 1956 he left the air Force to join Raytheon Missile Systems Division, where he worked as a System/Test Engineer for 17 years. During that time he and his family lived in Malibu, Calif., and Dayton, Ohio.

In 1980 the family moved back to Placerville, Calif., to be close to the mountains and relatives they so loved and missed. Both Bob and Lucy obtained their realtor's licenses in El Dorado County in the 1980s and sold real estate until Bob retired last year. They particularly enjoyed the friendships they made during their years in this community.

Bob was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and enjoyed fishing, hiking, swimming, snow sports and spending time with his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Lucy; three sons, Richard, Randy and Chris; daughter, Melinda; daughter-in-law, Betty Barnes; brother-in-law, Jim Ryerson; and five grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Shakespeare Club on Bedford Street. In lieu of flowers you may wish to donate to Dr. Wun, Re: Leukemia research, c/o Division of Hematology Oncology, UC Davis Cancer Center, 4501 X Street, Sacramento, CA 95817, or EAA, c/o Placerville Airport, 3501 Airport Road #1, Placerville, CA 95667.
