ADDED: Jet fighters at Tripoli, and the Battalion of Marines would have had to be stationed at Benghazi. Maybe jet fighters at Tripoli (maybe), but never a Battalion of Marines at Benghazi. Too big a force to sit around waiting for the Ambassador to make an occasional visit.

DB, it’s an old lawyer trick to demand yes or no answers to questions. Been there, done that. So, given that neither of us know the real facts, will answer accordingly. #1: Could be, but also may have been a terror attack when the bad guys realized the Ambassador was in the lightly guarded consulate. #2: It happened before the sequester so don’t know why you mentioned the sequester. Don’t think budget cuts impeded the event because he was in a place he shouldn’t have been and if cuts had not been made, not sure what improvements would have been made to security at Benghazi that would have made a difference, absent the assignment of a Battalion of Marines and jet fighters on standby in Tripoli. #3: After initial alert, a stand down order would have been appropriate when it was realized there were no forces close enough to react in time. That no forces were close enough has been stated by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. #4: No, not to me, but then I’m a tiny fish in the smallest of ponds and I have no right to know because of classification. And no, it doesn’t bother me because in my 31 years in the military I was constantly not told secrets beyond my compartment. In the black world there are many many thousands of secrets that the public will never know. Just the way it is until the government is overthrown and you get to break into the safes and secure rooms.

Colonel, I respect the military service you gave to our country and I’ve tried very hard to value your experiences and opinions regarding military matters. 1. Do you believe that a video was the cause of the Benghazi embassy attack on September 11th 2012? [O/yes] or [O/no]
2. Do you believe that the Benghazi embassy attack was allowed to happen due to any budget cuts or the sequester that began in March of 2013? [O/yes] or [O/no]
3. Do you believe that nearby military forces (air or ground) should have been given a “stand down order” to stop any assistance to the embassy occupants during the Benghazi embassy attack? [O/yes] or [O/no]
4. Do you believe that the Obama Administration has given a clear and unquestionable answer to the American people as to the events that happened in the Benghazi embassy attack? [O/yes] or [O/no]

Update to Benghazi Murders: 1. Petraes “CIA Chief”, gone. 2. Eric Boswell, “Asst. Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security”, gone. 3. Charlene Lamb “Deputy Asst. Secretary for Embassy Security”, gone. 4. Un-named “Official”, gone. 5. Susan Rice, “UN Ambassador” should be gone although now has no hopes of becoming Secretary of State. 6. Hilary Clinton, “Secretary of State” should be gone as all these idiots worked for her and now no hopes of becoming next President as she has called in sick to work. 7. Barack Obama “President” should be gone as the main leader of all the above. He said the buck stops with him so we’ll see. Obviously on the “job training” has not worked out for America.

Same as it was in Vietnam — I could never be sure if South Vietnamese officers were VC or NVA under cover and same problem in Afghanistan. Friend or foe, who can tell for sure. So, no way we can just depart out the back door without the other side knowing.

Americans have to make the decision whether a strategic presence in the area, coupled with oil access across the country and vast potential strategic materials are worth the pain, blood, lives, and drain on our treasury in continuing the mission. Given the vastness of the country and tribal society, we can never secure the country, and the
mission never should have been undertaken by boots on the ground. Pull out and pass the mission to Special/Covert Operations which should have had the mission in the first place.
For those who will say this is cut and run, my military experience tells me there is a time to advance, and a time to advance in the other direction.
