Crispy, cell phone laws are an example of how government uses laws to make us all equal. There are those who have no business having a drivers license so the states answer is to make you equal with them. Ever notice how law enforcement drive while typing on a computer, talking on a cell phone and texting. CB radios have been around for decades and there was never a problem with them. And none of them were hands free.

I can hear the yelling already, but…I have been talking on my cell in my car since the first one I bought in 1991. I periodically send and read texts while driving. Big deal. Some of us can handle it, some cant. Mostly younger drivers I think.

I bet the same people who scream about thier gun rights will tell me to ‘put down my phone and drive!’. Sorry. Guns kill more peeps than cell phones. I will continue to talk and text away!

Ms. Franck, I have had several “near misses” form people visibly texting. I believe they should be ticketed and if in an accident, there should be an “enhancement”. I know if someone hit my wife while texting I would want to help them eat their phone. However, your statement: “How about random checkpoints, like we have for drunk driving, where police check cell phones to make sure people haven’t recently sent texts?” seems like opening a door to 1st amendment violations. If they are seen texting, fine ‘em big time . . . but read their messages? Even as much as I despise “texters”, we should not infringe on their right to privacy and free speech. If anything, only the time of the last message sent should be available for review.
