Wow! District 3 supervisorial candidate Brian Veerkamp won the 73rd annual John M. Studebaker Wheelbarrow Race. The 54-year-old retired firefighter beat out a lot of younger men.
Not only that, this is his eighth win, beating out a field of a couple of dozen this year.
The event, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Placerville, seems to be owned by either a Veerkamp, a Visman or a Mosbacher over the years and occasionally loaned to someone without one of those last names.
This year’s crowd pleaser, though, was Steve Askin, a 57-year-old participant who had lost a leg in a plane crash. Askin’s grit and competitiveness was an inspiration for all.
The wheelbarrow races always are the highlight of June.
