In the wake of prinicipal’s shooting, a call for grace

By February 3, 2011

As we all have tried to process the tragic death of Schnell School’s beloved principal, Sam LaCara, no doubt we, as a community, are a mix of emotions. It’s impossible to comprehend what the LaCara family, and the students, parents and staff at Schnell, are coping with. While we wrestle with grief, disbelief and rage, we need to realize that another family has lost a father and husband.

I don’t know Mr. Luebbers, but I know his wife and daughter. They are truly lovely people, and I have enjoyed getting to know them as they tirelessly volunteered at community events on Broadway in recent years. I can’t even begin to imagine the heartache they are enduring, as well as the LaCara family.

As I write this, we have not heard what motivated the tragedy. As we await the details that will come in the days ahead, I encourage our community to take a lesson from the Amish who dealt with their own school tragedy. In their grief, they reached out to the shooter’s family with grace. Let us keep firmly in mind that Mr. Luebbers’ wife and daughter are innocent victims in this as well, their lives forever altered. They need our prayers, support and embrace of community.
