My turn: Obamacare failure

By
From page A4 | December 04, 2013 | 76 Comments

The so-called “Affordable Care Act” (ACA), better known as Obamacare, was a disaster to start with and gets worse every day. It’s such a confusing mess, with ever-changing targets, that even the Obama administration itself seems to be winging it on the biggest social policy shift since the New Deal.

Recently the president committed a stunning about-face by announcing that insurance companies could temporarily continue offering insurance plans that were going to be cancelled because they don’t meet the “essential benefits” requirements of the Obamacare plans. As many as 10 million people were scheduled to lose their plans as of January 1st. Now they aren’t — or at least might not be — because it’s not clear the president had the authority to change the law without Congress.

Now the insurance companies don’t know if they will be breaking the law if they follow the president’s lead. People have no idea what policies they will be able to buy. Nobody seems to know anything, and everyone is scrambling to get information to help them make these important decisions. And who knows what the rules will be next week?

One thing that is clear, though, is that some people are going to be kicked out of their old plans and have to buy new, ACA-sanctioned plans, and they’re not going to like it. The ACA plans all have loads of useless add-ons that most will never use but will still have to pay for. Men’s plans will have mandatory maternity coverage. People who have never had so much as a sip of alcohol will have to pay for heroin treatment in their plans. It’s ridiculous and it’s expensive.

People in my senate district have been shocked by costs of the new plans. Here are a few examples from my constituents:

“I now pay $430 a month. For the same coverage/plan starting January 1st it will go up to $800 a month. My husband and I own a small business and don’t know how we are going to afford keeping healthcare insurance at that price…”

“My existing premium is $240/month. The least expensive new quoted premium is $404/month. Not only is this a 67 percent increase in premiums, but also an increase in the co-insurance from 0 percent to 40 percent.”

“I was informed that my health insurance plan has been cancelled. I liked my plan. I guess ‘I’ don’t get to keep it. The plan that was offered to me and my husband was three times what I was paying before! We cannot afford to pay more.”

Somebody needs to tell me and all of these people how this is considered “affordable” to anyone? If we really wanted affordability, we would loosen the reins on insurance companies, and let them offer plans across state lines to increase competition. We would let them sell customized plans that weren’t full of coverage that people will never use. If we took just those two steps, California consumers would have so many more options at so many more prices. We would have a better marketplace and everyone would benefit. Instead, we are going for the central planning route that has never been successful for getting people what they want for a good value.

After years of work and billions of dollars invested, nobody knows for sure when Obamacare starts or how much it costs and this confusion has been a huge factor in the pitifully low enrollment rates. For average people just wanting to know what they have to do not to break the new law or break their bank, it’s too confusing and changes too often to let them make good decisions.

When it came to healthcare reform, the Obama Administration didn’t know what to do or how to do it. They’ve just made everything worse. Free-market reforms could have given citizens better options at a fraction of the cost, without having the government hijack one-sixth percent of the economy.

Senator Ted Gaines represents the 1st Senate District, which includes all or parts of Alpine, El Dorado, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, Shasta, Sierra and Siskiyou counties.

Ted, I just don’t believe you, your credibility is near zero with our family. Seems this is the same BS argument. For $204 you got minimum health care coverage which is great if your 20 years old, healthy and can afford to cover any additional cost out of pocket. Most cant so we the tax payers end up covering the additional cost. When you get to middle age or older most need the additional coverage that comes in the $404. package.

Ted, where were you in trying to make this a better "LAW"? I am so tired of hearing you , McClintock and others from the GOP whine. You're getting paid to help the people in California, get off your well paid A## and do your job. I'm glad I left the Republican Party, it was hard to stand behind a "DO NOTHING" party. By the way, that "FREE MARKET" got us into the "GREAT RECESSION". Oh, but then you still had your job and your daddy's insurance company. Oh, and your wife got her "DO NOTHING JOB". I seriously doubt if you have ever paid for your own health insurance.

I have always been curious why it is common among progressive/socialist/leftist/communists to misrepresent themselves as "converted". Do you really believe people with even a tiny bit of sense buy it? Are you hoping that your claim will cause someone who understands the importance of limited government to suddenly have an epiphany and abandon reason and logic for government slavery?

The primary objective of ocommycare has come to light. The aclu is going to sue Covered California because they aren't getting people registered as dims fast enough. Calling ocommycare about healthcare is like calling the dept of education about education. It couldn't be further from the truth.

I did a quick survey of friends around the county and found that they all have signed onto insurance policies that meet the minimum requirements of the ACA for under $200 per month. All of these individuals got a better plan than they had previously for about 1/3 the cost. All of these individuals are over 50. Sounds like a success to me.

  • cookie65December 04, 2013 - 8:19 am

How could they have signed up for a policy that didn't meet the minimum requirements? Have they confirmed that they are actually signed up? Claims such as these have more holes in them than a screen door. But it how leftism works. Lie about how wonderful it is.

Any 50 year old who is getting insurance for $200/month is being subsidized -- which means the money paid by the working middle class is being used to pay for their insurance. That's welfare. Plans for 50 year olds without subsidies are generally in the $600/month range.

Here Dink---------ACLU Alleges Covered California Fails To Provide Adequate Voting Registration Opportunities Wednesday, November 27, 2013 The American Civil Liberties Union of California says that it believes Covered California, the state's health insurance exchange, is lagging behind other state-run health exchanges’ voter registration opportunities for newly eligible health insurance applicants. If Covered California does not improve voter registration on its application process by Dec. 16, ACLU will consider legal action. A Covered California spokesperson has said that the health exchange website contains a voter registration button and that the exchange is hiring a voter registration coordinator. Phil, this is a family show. I will cut you some slack though since you could be experiencing hypothermia because of all the global warming going on outside. I guess I should clarify low hanging fruit for some of our less read audience. Low hanging fruit is a colloquialism that originates in the farming industry. Something Phil is well experienced with. It refers to the fruit that is most easily harvested (easy pickin's). It has been adopted to represent those individuals who would qualify as the most easily fooled. The simplest to persuade, sell, convince and swindle. Our mortgage meltdown was do in large part to the "low hanging fruit". People who believe property values doubling and tripling in a matter of month's was real so they used their homes as ATM's and bought all kinds of stuff. Those who believed they would be able to keep their plan if they liked it were "low hanging fruit". Those got sold hope and change were/are "low hanging fruit".

This Republican's solution? Buy your own damn insurance. Do we really want MORE people on welfare in this state? That's all those subsidies are: welfare. Health insurance did not get cheaper under Obamacare. They are simply spending other people's money (that's what taxes are!) to let lower-income people pay less. I pay $350/month for a high deductible, private plan am waiting for it to be cancelled under Obamacare -- and it's new replacement is $600/month for the same deductible. That's affordable?

At least I get to retain some privacy with my private health insurance. With Obamas plan you do not retain your privacy. JUst like a majority of what comes from this administration. Look, if your car needs a tune up do you buy a new car or do the tune up? which is cheaper in the long run? But those who voted for him and stick with him are ignorant to the actuality that the man is breaking constitutional laws as well as lying perpetually to the country. Many white South Africans died and were swept under the rug when Mandela came into power. Granted he made a call for peace, it took some time. There are several videos of him singing songs that call for the death of the white man. So no Mandela was not a saint. Can you provide links to any video(s) documenting his having called for the death of ANYONE? Otherwise, I'm inclined to believe you have him confused with his ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela Mandela. I count myself among the legion of white people resident at that time in South Africa who credit Mandela with saving South Africa from the expected post-apartheid bloodbath.

Evelyn, I know nothing of South Africa or Mandela. I do know his wife was/is not nice person. That said, after looking at the headline of my search for more information, I hope any friends or family you left behind have an escape plan.

Thank you, Dee. FROM MANDELA'S 1964 TREASON TRIAL SUMMATION: "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have carried the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunity. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

Evelyn - thank goodness El Dorito County is home to the likes of Tom Gibney, and not murderous scoundrels like Nelson Mandela.

Foaming: Seasons greetings. Though having never met Mr. Gibney, I love his comments and agree he's a welcome addition to El Dorado County. Over 11 years now? (He's forgiven for being a gun totin' Rush luvin right wing Republican. Can't all be perfect!!!)
