Stand-up sheriff

Kudos to El Dorado County Sheriff John D’Agostini for taking the time to not only attend but to also speak at meetings of both the El Dorado County Republican Women Federated and the Democratic Women of El Dorado County over the course of a week recently. While one may have been a little more comfortable than the other, the elected official made the effort to be available for both sides in hopes of explaining his views, whether they seemed controversial or on the button to his many constituents in attendance.

There are many out there who completely disagree with D’Agostini’s stance on several topics. His letter to Vice President Joe Biden was a conversation starter throughout the county, and spearheaded his invites to both functions, where he was applauded in one and debated in the other. A recent My Turn article we printed by Pat Snelling spoke about the petition she presented the sheriff after the Democratic Women gathering. In the column, she said, “I decided to collect signatures for a petition asking the sheriff to: Trace guns confiscated in a crime (he’s doing that now at the state level) … Provide needed information for background checks (he’s doing this also at the state level). D’Agostini said that he didn’t want to work with the feds on this.”

D’Agostini’s stance wasn’t the popular one that night, but he stood by it. Attendees claim he was outdebated by Larry Beutler, Ph.D. in Psychology, and former director of the National Center for the Psychology of Terrorism. That was an expected result as the sheriff was armed with not much more than a a pocket-sized edition of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights and his personal opinion. Still, he kept on kicking, countering Buetler’s statistics and studies with statements like, “I trust the CCW person more, because the bad guys don’t apply for them.” The sheriff believed in his fundamental stance that guns aren’t the problem, the people acquiring them illegally are. A statement like, “And for every study the doctor cited there are opposing studies” isn’t going to win a debate, but that wasn’t the sheriff’s purpose for attending.

It’s refreshing to see someone in a position of authority approach the situation with a balanced attack on multiple fronts. While the county is overwhelmingly red, D’Agostini wanted to make it clear that he represents blue, too, even if he’ll often agree to disagree with the blue folks.

Jokingly welcomed into the “lion’s den” at the Democratic Women event, D’Agostini got a big round of applause when he concluded, “This is not a lion’s den. I work for you.” Even Snelling’s column included the line, “I have a lot of respect for the sheriff and his people, but blocking any effort to get guns out of the hands of criminals can only make his job that much more difficult.” Opposition comes from the difference in opinion on his stance, not on what he’s been doing for the county since elected or who he’s been as a public figure.

We’ve been impressed in the several interactions we’ve had with D’Agostini, as he seems to be consistently making an effort to reach out to the community at large, and not just the ones on his side. We hope this continues from the Sheriff’s Office for years to come, and becomes an example to other leaders in how to represent the public.

Richard, who was it needed for? It is the leftists who are going backwards in their anti-2nd Amendment agenda. You are the overwhelming minority in this county. You and all those who share in your groupthink drooled over the photo-op obama had with the victims of Sandy yet those people are still homeless without water and heat. It is obama who had to get a photo shopped pic released of him shooting a shotgun. It is the left who denied dianne feinstein’s bill a vote. The left has been running an endless PR campaign claiming to be in support of the 2nd Amendment because they know, even if you don’t, that the American people don’t support their agenda. The PR still continues over obamacare and roughly 70% of the nation still oppose it. Have you noticed the endless excuses the left makes for obama’s endless failures in our economy? How did the PR using the video for an excuse in Benghazi turn out? How about obama taking credit for increased oil production when the opposite is true? How about all the PR over all of the green energy bankruptcies? The PR over GM that the taxpayers have lost @$40 billion on? The PR over the muslim brotherhood? The PR over the price of gas? The PR over sequester that came from the whitehouse? The PR over releasing 3,000 criminal illegals? The PR over endless vacations while shutting down the whitehouse tours? The obama presidency has been one endless PR campaign and the entire country is paying for it. Even a dog knows the difference between being tripped over and kicked, too bad you don’t.

And now watch in amazement ladies and gentlemen as the grand old party reverses its position on immigration, gays and the environment! What a joke! The next generation of Americans is ready to take up the mantle of freedom and liberty!

I can hardly wait for the lying and quitter Hildabeast and her lying ,adulterous impeached president to run. If they did make it then Willy would be back in the House where he can screw around all he wants with some barely legal aides while on our dime. Why him and the beast could meet up in the Oval Office and he could become the real 1st B*tch of America. That would really be something to brag about. Obumbo has been the worse president since the "lusting in my heart" peanut farmer. Keep your hopes on the BEAST Chrisp.

How about yuppies priorities? Gay marriage, Really? It has been repeatedly defeated by democratic vote everywhere it has been on the ballot. That is why the left needs to stack the court. It is the only way they can get their agenda forced on America. Immigration? Setting 3,000 illegal criminals free sure went over well. The people looking for job, waiting at the emergency room, fighting for an education and witnessing the increased crime rates and drug problems don’t support giving blanket citizenship to 20 million illegals. The environment? You may be way behind but everyone else has figured out just how out of control the epa and all the other anti-business spin-offs are. By the time 2016 arrives the national debt will be way north of $20 trillion, the cost of healthcare will have crushed small business, welfare will have reached 60 million households, hundreds of schools will have closed, poverty will be the norm for middle America, obama’s foreign policy will be even more of a disaster than it already is. The public sector pensions will be consuming most of the tax revenue while those paying for it won’t be able to afford to retire. You may wish for the destruction of prosperity but most of America does not. Do you know the best way to take a low information obama voter and make them informed? Simple, let them witness the results of leftism. Tell me something, how come a large majority of Americans support and across the board 5% minimum cut in federal spending? Do you not understand obama is losing the battle on sequester, even among the low information types like you?

Yuppie, in the socailist utopia of Chicago the board of education is going to spend $7.7 million to create what they call safe passages patrol to allow the kids to travel without being assaulted, robbed or shot on their the longer trips to school because they are closing at least 54 public schools. What this county needs is a "Speaker's Corner" like they have in Hyde Park in London. Then all the folks who write these comments could gather and express their opinions openly.

“I trust the CCW person more, because the bad guys don’t apply for them.”..... Isn't that the POINT?..... Background checks! (Have to have one with a CCW)..... The Sheriff ADMITTED at the Democrat's meeting that the 23-Executive-Orders & Biden's Letter did NOT violate the 2nd AMENDMENT..... that called for BACKGROUND CHECKS.....

Dink, last time I checked everything obama and his braindead following support is aimed directly at law abiding citizens and will do absolutely zero to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. How come with all the laws on the books already the criminals still have guns?

  • DB SmithMarch 27, 2013 - 4:50 pm

Mr. Dink. You should concentrate your anger toward the criminal and not the law abiding citizen. Here is a start for you...talk about enforcing the laws as they are already written and those that do not obey the law will suffer the true consequences. No plea bargaining, no whining, no pass go for good time, no excuses just real time. A criminal doesn't obey the law and that is why they are called criminals. Would you want to bad matches from the law abiding citizen just because a fire bug commits arson and kills people and destroys property? Wake up!

George Bush signed a Bill in 2007 (with the NRA President stand to his right) that BLOCKED ATF, and state officials from getting the Data need in those Laws you say are NOT enforced. They couldn't even trace a GUN USED IN A CRIME..... Believe me, if D'Agostini could pull up that Data when he's hunting a bad-guy he'd do it in a minute...... Obama's Executive Orders OVER-TURNED....that 2007 Bill that NRA WROTE.

We can expect what ever the left attempts to get the opposite results. It is as predictable as the sunrise. For years they have told us of the importance of sex-ed in schools and we have the highest teen pregnancy rate ever and now we have another stellar example of leftist thinking. http://cnsnews.com/news/article/cdc-110197000-venereal-infections-us-nation-creating-new-stis-faster-new-jobs-or

Here is another thing leftism creates. People who can never escape the dem plantation so they will always be dependent on government and leftists. The mayor of Chicago had this to say about the union run schools in Chicago. The mayor called it intolerable that a school system with a 61 percent graduation rate for all students, graduates just 45 percent of black males. Why would any thinking person what anything to do with leftism? http://www.suntimes.com/19128284-761/police-arrest-school-protesters-as-they-block-downtown-streets.html

So Greg, when you are already so far behind it will be difficult for you to catch up but even AP has to report reality on occasion. Here is the latest from AP on the obamaeconomy. After four years of he and all his disastrous marxists policies the national economy is growing at 0.4%. If all the academics he surrounds himself with were even half as smart at the want people to believe we would have already rebounded. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_ECONOMY_GDP?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2013-03-28-08-33-49

Take a wild guess at which places have prosecuted the fewest federal gun crimes? For all you leftists, that means actally enforcing existing laws. http://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/washington-whispers/2013/03/28/chicago-los-angeles-new-york-prosecuted-fewest-federal-gun-crimes

Cookie--The story was taken from a Federal Weapons Report (http://trac.syr.edu/tracreports/crim/307/) A majority of the Gun-Crimes were handled at the STATE & LOCAL level. Remember, most of the GUN LAWS are "State laws" and "Local laws" -- Not Federal. Federal Officials cannot try you for a State or Local crime. According to the Report, the ones that fell through the cracks were the MISHANDLED cases.

Dink, your point although true has nothing to do with this report. This report is based on the number of prosecutions for federal weapons offenses. Federal gun crimes include illegal possession of a firearm in a school zone, illegal sale of a firearm to a juvenile, felon, or drug addict, and illegal transport of a firearm across state lines. In Chicago, the majority of gun charges last year were for firearms violations. It is a matter of having actionable offenses with no prosecution. The ATF is not a state agency.
