SACRAMENTO — American River College Theatre continues its season with Christopher Sergel’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s heart-wrenching, humorous and powerful “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Based closely on Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, this American classic tackles issues of racial injustice and the loss of innocence when Atticus Finch, a lawyer in a quiet southern town, chooses to defend a black man facing charges of rape.

As his friends and neighbors turn against him, Atticus’ young daughter, Scout, learns lessons both sad and beautiful when she comes to his aid. Don’t miss your opportunity to see this moving story brought to life onstage.

Directed by Sam Williams, “To Kill a Mockingbird” features some of the finest community college talent in the area as well as set, light and costume designs by award-winning designers Kathy Burleson and Gail Russell.

From the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, productions of Sergel’s compelling and honest adaptation have played to sold-out crowds.

“We knew this production would resonate with our audiences and teachers, but it certainly surpassed our expectations,” said STNJ’s Artistic Director Bonnie J. Monte. “We are thrilled that so many students were able to attend To Kill a Mockingbird and experience the extraordinary power of the story.”

The play contains adult language and subject matter.

The play runs on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. starting Friday Feb. 24 to Sunday, March 4, with one Thursday night performance Thursday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m.

All performances of “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be at American River College Theatre, 4700 College Oak Drive in Sacramento. Weekend parking is free in Lot D at the corner of College Oak and Myrtle, adjacent to the theater. Weeknight parking is $1. Ticket prices are $12 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors and SARTA members.

For tickets and information call the box office at 916-484-8234 or e-mail boxoffice@arc.losrios.edu or visit seatyourself.biz/arctheatre.
