Donna Coots, now a resident of Pollock Pines, was Valens’s sweetheart, the inspiration for “Donna” his biggest hit record.
After 28 years, the events of that day, of Valens’s career and his relationship with Coots have been brought back to life in “La Bamba,” a new film released by Columbia Pictures …
Film makers first contacted Coots about a Valens movie in 1975, she said. But it was not until last year that they showed her the rough draft script, she said …
“Some people have said that the love angle was a little weak (in the movie),” Coots said. “But we were only 15, 16. And it wasn’t a love story. It was a story about a young man’s struggle to have his music heard, not so much stardom. Ritchie wasn’t so hot on being a star as he wanted everybody to hear his music. That was his whole life.”

Luigi Raffetto, a cousin of our townsman, F. J. Raffetto, died at Oakland on Sunday, the 24th instant, from complications resulting from rheumatism, He formerly resided at Newtown, but left this county about twenty-five years ago and was, at the time of his death, a prominent business man of Oakland. His age was sixty-two years, and he leaves a widow and two sons.
