At a glance: Good eats

Escabar_MimiOn this date in 2004 the world’s fattest raccoon died. Not too sure how this was verified but it is also interesting that it was even noted. Maybe raccoons need to pay more attention to eating nutritious food and not junk from trash cans.

Some yummy eating

A great place to get a good meal and help a really good cause is Mountain Mike’s Pizza, at the corner of Cameron Park Drive and Green Valley Road in Cameron Park. On Wednesday, May 8 from between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. have lunch or dinner and a portion of the purchase will go directly to supporting the Ponderosa High School Sober Grad Night. Just remember to tell the server you are there for the fundraiser. Visit the Website phsSoberGradNight.org for more information.

With the arrival of May, the Farmers Market at the Ivy House parking lot, at the corner of Main and Clay streets in Placerville, is open from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be fresh produce, flowers and other items from local farmers to buy every Saturday through October. For more details call 530-622-1900.

On Saturday, May 11 Mount Aukum Winery, 6781 Tower Road in Mt. Aukum, is having an Anniversary Dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. For the appetizer course a 2009 Viognier Fair Play will be served with sweet corn and pepper crabcake on yellow pepper coulis with lemon truffle crema and micro herbs. The spring bouquet salad of organic baby greens covered in edible flowers, strawberries, goat cheese, micro green and pistachios with champagne vinaigrette will pair with a 2009 Marsanne El Dorado. Rustic hearth bread and butter will be served with the main course of beef marinated in garlic, rosemary and olives, skewered with lemons, onions and grilled; green onion and sour cream mashers; Yukon gold potatoes with fresh buttermilk; grilled vegetables of the season drizzled in olive oil paired with a 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, Indian hill Vineyards. The dessert is a chocolate martini — dark chocolate ganache, chocolate mousse and whipped cream in a chocolate rimmed martini glass with a fresh berry swizzle stick will go with a 2009 Zinfandel Sierra Foothills. For tickets call 530-620-1675.
