On this date in 2004 the world’s fattest raccoon died. Not too sure how this was verified but it is also interesting that it was even noted. Maybe raccoons need to pay more attention to eating nutritious food and not junk from trash cans.

With the arrival of May, the Farmers Market at the Ivy House parking lot, at the corner of Main and Clay streets in Placerville, is open from 8 a.m. to noon. On Saturday, May 11 Mount Aukum Winery, 6781 Tower Road in Mt. Aukum, is having an Anniversary Dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. For the appetizer course a 2009 Viognier Fair Play will be served with sweet corn and pepper crabcake on yellow pepper coulis with lemon truffle crema and micro herbs. The spring bouquet salad of organic baby greens covered in edible flowers, strawberries, goat cheese, micro green and pistachios with champagne vinaigrette will pair with a 2009 Marsanne El Dorado. Rustic hearth bread and butter will be served with the main course of beef marinated in garlic, rosemary and olives, skewered with lemons, onions and grilled; green onion and sour cream mashers; Yukon gold potatoes with fresh buttermilk; grilled vegetables of the season drizzled in olive oil paired with a 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, Indian hill Vineyards.
