Chop suey was supposedly invented on this date, Aug. 29, 1896 during Qing Dynasty premier Li Hongzhang’s visit to the United States. His chef was trying to create a dish suitable for both Chinese and American palates. The dish features meat (often chicken, fish, beef, prawns, or pork) and eggs, cooked quickly with vegetables such as bean sprouts, cabbage, and celery in a starch-thickened sauce. It is now a popular dish and served around the world.
