At a glance: On shaky ground

San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics fans, and many others definitely remember Oct. 17 in 1989. The Loma Prieta Earthquake shook things up and postponed the third game of the World Series. The slip along the San Andreas Fault killed 62 people, caused major damage throughout northern California and left many people homeless. Hopefully the Giants will be back in the World Series this year and only the Giants’ pitching and hitting will shake things up for the other team.

 

Dazzling time

The Placerville Fellowship and Newcomers Club is having its annual fashion show at Cold Springs Golf and Country Club, 6500 Clubhouse Drive in Placerville, on Thursday, Oct. 18. The theme this year is “Razzle Dazzle” and hats are encouraged to express that theme. Maybe a baseball hat might work. To find out if reservations are still available call 530-642-8412.

 

Gourds galore

The Rescue Volunteer Fire Association is having its sixth annual Pumpkin Patch and Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Rescue Fire Department, Station 83, 5221 Deer Valley Road in Rescue. Stop by and have a great breakfast and enter your carved pumpkin in the Pumpkin Decorating Contest. The public will vote for the best pumpkins during breakfast and the three gourds with the most votes will win a $10 prizes. Winners will be announced at 11 a.m. Pumpkins will be on sale through Oct. 31. To get more details call 530-676-1125.

 


Phoenix rising

Oakstone Winery is open again at 6470 Irish Acres Road in Fair Play. That’s around the corner from the old location. There is an “Old Guys” Release and Celebration party on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19, 20 and 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the barrel room. Everyone is invited to taste the 10th anniversary 2010 Old Man Murrill Zinfandel and the 2010 Murrill Vineyard Sangiovese. The friendly staff will also be pouring the 2009 version of both wines and maybe even a few bottles of older editions of these wines. Happy hoedown

Shadow Ranch Vineyard, 7050 Fairplay Road in Fair Play, is hosting its sixth annual Harvest Hoedown on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. The free family event will have live music by Home By Dark, pork slider barbecue catered by Capital Sierra Catering, pumpkins, kids crafts, face painting and pony rides. Cameron Park carnival

The Cameron Park Community Services District is getting into the Halloween spirit with a Halloween Carnival and Pumpkin Patch on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m. at Cameron Park Lake, 2989 Cambridge Road. Get dressed in a favorite costume and enjoy old-fashioned carnival games with prizes, pumpkin patch, maze, crafts, costume parade, food, refreshments and more. Entrance to this event is free. Lobsterpalooza

Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Placerville is putting on Lobsterpalooza on Saturday, Oct 20 to raise money for the repair and re-leading of the stained glass windows. The Lobsterpaloza is at the American Legion Hall, 4561 Greenstone Road in Placerville, from 4 to 8 p.m. Besides lobster and the sides of clam chowder, green salad, potato salad and corn on the cob, there will be hot dogs for the kids; music by Frankie Soul, Murphy Mountain and The Method; and a bunch of nice prizes. Oktoberfest

The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus is having an Oktoberfest and Dance on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Gurnell at St. Patrick Church in Placerville. Big event

The Big Autumn Auction benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Dorado County is Saturday, Oct. 20 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Blue Shield of California, 4203 Town Center Blvd. in El Dorado Hills. This is a lovely evening with wine tasting, a wonderful dinner and a silent and live auction with fabulous prizes. Art and wine

The Placerville Downtown Association is having its Art and Wine Festival on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. The night includes wine tasting inside stores on Main Street, music by the great band Aftershock at the Belltower, art in the galleries, art demonstrations and the auction of the Banners On Parade. Get crafty

Art and Craft vendors are needed for the annual Cameron Park Christmas Craft Fair set for Saturday, Nov. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cameron Park Community Center. Items must be handmade by the vendor.
