Escabar_MimiSaturday, May 25 is National Wine Day. Who knows how they choose these days but it sounds like a good idea. Wine is even now considered a healthy beverage and there are many varietals and blends that go with all kinds of food. À votre santé.

Seeing stars

Saturday also brings the potential for an outburst of bright meteors. What a great way to start the Memorial Day weekend with a bunch of shooting stars. Earth is traveling through a number of dusty trails from a small comet and in the predawn hours on Saturday it should be a good show. Be sure to make a wish.

Musical stars

Musical stars will be performing at Powell’s Steamer Company and Pub, 425 Main St. in Placerville, starting on Thursday, May 22 with Frankie Soul and Larry Park playing at 8 p.m. The Tri Tones take the stage on Saturday, May 24 at 9 p.m. and Out of the Blue is playing Sunday, May 25 at 1 p.m. Have some stellar food and a good time. For more details call 530-626-1091.

Born Barefoot will be playing on the lawn at Crystal Basin Bistro, 3550 Carson Road in Camino, on Friday, May 23 at 6 p.m. There is plenty of food, wine and beer to go with the fun music for dancing. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 530-303-3749.

Participating wineries are Auriga, Holly’s Hill, Miraflores, Narrow Gate and Sierra Vista. Cost is $35 per person in advance online, $40 per person at the door and $20 per designated driver. Besides a nice time you get logo stemware.

Then Madroña Vineyards, 2560 High Hill Road in Camino, is having an open house on Saturday and Sunday, May 24 and 25 from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Stop by for lunch, including gourmet hamburgers, music by the great band The Pickups, barrel tasting and more. Tickets are $10. For reservations call 530-644-5948.

For all the facts call 530-620-5303.

C.G. Di Arie Tasting Room, 1821 Pleasant Valley Road in Placerville, is having Tasting with the Winemaker — The Art of Blending on Saturday, May 24 from noon-4 p.m. This is an interactive tasting and is a very fun informative way to learn about what goes into an award-winning wine. Cost is $5 per person. For more information call 530-622-4100.

Dining for a cause

There will be a good time at the Spring Dinner presented by the Community Resource Center on Saturday, May 24 at the Veterans Memorial Building, 130 Placerville Drive in Placerville, from 5-8 p.m. The evening will have a pasta feast, silent auction, dessert dash and more. This fundraiser for the Resource Center will help to provide housing, supportive services and homelessness prevention in El Dorado County. For more information call 408-460-2061.

Night of song

Enjoy the sounds of barbershop quartet music at a special concert at the American Legion El Dorado Posts 119, 4561 Greenstone Road in Placerville, on Saturday, May 24 at 7 p.m. The show will be in a relaxed table setting environment and feature the best local chapter quartets. Tickets are $5.
