Escabar_MimiOn Aug. 21, 1959 Hawaii became the 50th state. There are so many cool things to do to celebrate this beautiful state — wear a lei or puka shells, have some pineapple, have an exotic cocktail or a fun barbecue or just visit that perfect beach and surf.


Beautiful sunsets

The popular local band Uncommon Ground might break out some Hawaiian shirts at Boeger Winery’s Sunset Sippin’ on Friday, Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. The band will be performing originals and classic covers in the lovely outdoor area at 1709 Carson Road in Placerville. By the way, Uncommon Ground will also be playing at Mira Flores Winery, 2120 For Springs Trail in the Pleasant Valley area, on Sunday, Aug. 25 during the annual car show starting at 11 a.m.


Decade of tastes

Holly’s Hill Vineyards, 3680 Leisure Lane in Placerville, is celebrating a decade of Holly’s Hill’s Patriarche, the beautiful blend of Rhone wines. Skool’s in

The band Rock Skool will be playing classic rock songs from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s at Saturday Night in the Park, Aug. 24 at the El Dorado Hill Community Services District, 1021 Harvard Way in El Dorado Hills. The folks at Fenton Herriott Vineyards, 120 Jacquier Court in Placerville, are in a Polynesian mood and having A Taste of Hawaii luau on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. There will be Hawaiian music and dancers, and a Hawaiian-style menu of: Moloka’i shrimp spinach salad, Lomi Lomi salmon, Kalua Pua’a — Pulled Pork, Huli Huli chicken, pineapple fried rice, Hawaiian sweet potatoes and pineapple upside-down cake all matched with Fenton Herriott wines. Theater in the vines

Experience Theater in the Vineyard at David Girard Vineyards, 741 Cold Springs Road in the Gold Hill area, on Saturday, Aug. 24. “Art,” a one-act play stars Graham Drake-Maurer in a dark comedy about a wanna-be art connoisseur Serge who buys a white painting with white lines. His best friend Marc is skeptical that anyone would spend money on such a piece. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the curtain is at 7:30 p.m. No tickets are necessary. There is a suggested donation of $7. Wine by the glass, cheese and charcuterie will be available for sale. This is a PG-13 performance with some strong language.


Wine and song

Chanteuse Tamra Godey is pairing originals with the great beverages at the Wine Smith, 346 Main St. in Placerville, on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 8 p.m. For more details call 530-622-0516.


Wine, art and words

Mount Aukum Winery, 6781 Tower Road in Mt. Aukum, is featuring local artists, in partnership with art-related nonprofit programs in El Dorado County on Sunday, Aug. 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at An Afternoon of Art, Authors and Wine. Visitors can discover art by local artists, meet published authors, sample award-winning wines and enjoy gourmet appetizers.
