PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA
99 CENTS

Concert to feature Friction Quartet

The Mother Lode Friends of Music, the regional organization offering classical music performances in California’s historical gold country, presents a concert of chamber music on Sunday, May 4 at the Church of the Nazarene, 14050 Ridge Road in Sutter Creek. The concert starts at 2 p.m. There is no admission charge.

The program features the Friction Quartet, an ensemble of recent graduates of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music that is rapidly gaining a national reputation.

An advocate for contemporary music, the quartet has given 24 world premier performances and often supplements its presentation of the standard repertoire with the use of digital sound processing, percussion and combination with other media such as film and dance.

The May 4 concert will include a performance of the “String Quartet No. 2″ of American composer David Conte.

Now Professor of Composition and Conductor of the Chorus of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Conte is one of the last students of legendary teacher Nadia Boulanger. He is the composer of more than 70 published works, including five operas, works for chorus, chamber music, and solos for various instruments and voice. The second string quartet was composed in 2009 for the Ives Quartet.

The Friction Quartet is composed of Kevin Rogers and Otis Harriel, violins; Taija Warbelow, viola; and Doug Machiz, cello.

In the second half of the program, the Friction Quartet will be joined by clarinetist Roman Fukshansky in a performance of the “Quintet for Clarinet and Strings” of Johannes Brahms.

Now one of the Friends of Music’s most popular performers, the clarinetist was last heard locally as a soloist with the Friends of Music Orchestra in the spring of 2013 in a performance of the “Clarinet Concerto No. 2″ of Bernhard Crusell. Fukshansky is principal clarinetist with the Berkeley Symphony and the Modesto Symphony and frequently performs with the San Francisco Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas, accompanying the orchestra on its American tours.
