The El Dorado Arts Council is seeking out volunteer judges and tabulators for its Poetry Out Loud program.
This is the arts council’s fourth year sponsoring this thrilling, nationwide high school poetry competition. Each spring 53 high school state champions gather in Washington, D.C. to compete in the Poetry Out Loud National Finals.
Last May, El Dorado County’s Poetry Out Loud winner Corbin Gomez, an Oak Ridge High School student who graduated last spring, won the California state championship and competed at the national level. He placed among the top 12 students in the country, winning $1,000 and a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books at Oak Ridge.
Judges or tabulators for the El Dorado County high school competitions should have a love of the written word and approximately four to six hours to volunteer, including a judges training session. Previous judges and tabulators are welcome to return.
The Poetry Out Loud training sessions will be held at ArtSpace, 459 Main St. in Placerville, on Tuesday, Dec. 11 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 3 from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
