A collage of Dr. Seuss stories takes the stage in Folsom next month with El Dorado Musical Theatre’s production of “Seussical the Musical.”

Cheer on Horton as he tries with all his heart to protect the Whos and an egg entrusted to him by Mayzie La Bird.

Naysayers and hidden dangers lurk around every corner but the sincere-yet-fragile Horton never waivers in his promises.

“He cares about everything and everyone and will go to great lengths to do what ever he can for them,” said actor Zack Collins, 16, who takes on the Horton role in the Eggs Cast.

Zack describes himself as “the hipster Horton” — he wears cargo pants — and said he really enjoys the role of “the soft-hearted hero.”

Horton sets a good example of how people should live their lives, Zack explained.

Joining Horton in song and dance are the Grinch, Gertrude McFuzz, JoJo the Who, Thing One and Thing Two and, of course, that famous Cat in the Hat.

Actor Andrew Wilson takes on the striped-hat-wearing role in both the Ham and Eggs casts. He’s the narrator of this entertaining tale who’s a bit mischievous, Andrew admitted.

This is the second time EDMT has performed “Seussical the Musical,” with music by Stephen Flaherty, book by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens.

This time around Debbie Wilson has taken on two major roles as director and choreographer.

With two casts of 65 young performers a piece, Wilson has a lot of work in front of her.

The score is 452 pages, “which is huge,” she said. Most of “Seussical the Musical” is sung, she added, and the dialogue is in that familiar Dr. Seuss rhythm.

Is the effort and exhaustion worth it? You bet it is, she said.

“Anybody who grew up with Dr. Seuss will find something that touches them in the musical,” Wilson said. “It’s so heartfelt and the characters are fun.”

“Seussical the Musical” comes to Three Stages at Folsom Lake College, 10 College Parkway in Folsom, Nov. 2-18. Ham Cast performances are scheduled at 7 p.m. on Nov. 2, 9, 15 and 17; 2 p.m. on Nov. 3, 11 and 17. Eggs Cast performances are schedules at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3, 8, 10 and 16; 2 p.m. on Nov. 4, 10 and 18.

This show is rated G and is appropriate for all ages.

Tickets are $14.75 to $36 and may be purchased online at threestages.net or from the Three Stages ticket office at 916-608-6888 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and two hours before show time.
