Local band Hickory Wind will be jamming with Sacramento artist Jenn Rogar and the Adorables at the Cozmic Café, 594 Main St. in Placerville.

The show will be Friday, Jan. 20, from 8 to 11 p.m. Admission is $7.

Rogar has been playing since 1997 in and around Sacramento at coffee houses, restaurants, clubs, second Saturday events, peace rallies, festivals and fundraisers for various issues such as homelessness, peace and fighting domestic violence.

She has performed at Marilyns on K, Old Ironsides, Mundo Bizzaro, San Francisco’s Velo Rouge and Auburn’s Club Car.

Recently she performed on a big flat rock on the banks of the South Yuba River near Nevada City with other artists at Shrimp Fest put on by the Pleasant Revolutionaries.

Rogar is a progressive topical song writer in the tradition of Buffy Sainte Marie, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.

She is a fine interpreter of traditional and spiritual folk songs such as “Wayfaring Stranger,” “The Water is Wide” and “Queen of Hearts” and meaningful cover songs such as “Imagine” and has stylized them to make them her own.

Rogar grew up in Auburn and attended Placer High School. She was a flute player in the school’s marching band and was a member of the track team. She attended University of California, Davis and earned a BA in history and a teaching credential from California State University, Sacramento in 1991.

The singer has been teaching social studies for the Sacramento City Unified School District for 15 years.

The Hickory Wind band delivers a “not your normal country” sound in tribute to Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band as well as country-folk-rock sounds from the ’70s and ’80s.

Lead singer and acoustic guitarist Cheryll Kent has been a local favorite covering
these styles and the gospel music sound as a soloist and in various combos for many years.

The full band includes Country Swing Hall of Famer Dave Wren on pedal steel; the versatile Conrad Nelson on vocals, lead guitar, mandolin and fiddle; Bill Snyder of “Late for Dinner” on keyboards; and long time band members John Wiebold on drums and Fred Kent on vocals and bass.

For more information contact the Cozmic Café at 530-642-8481.
