“Love is in the air in downtown Placerville,” said new Placerville mayor Wendy Mattson. “I got a wonderful crazy idea from something they are doing in Saratoga and the Placerville Downtown Association approved it.”
The idea is a Love Note — a note of appreciation to whoever you wish to acknowledge. Participating Main Street merchants will display Love Notes in their windows from Feb.1 to Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14.
“They can be for a favorite someone; the people who water the flower baskets; someone who gave you great service in town, a special neighbor or whatever, ” said Mattson.
The Love Notes come in four different designs and the project is being sponsored by Mattson, Robinson Pharmacy owner Dennis Thomas and the Printing Press. It is free to downtown merchants and the community to participate.
“It’s easy to complain and focus on what we don’t like, but the majority of residents are here because they love Placerville,” said Mattson. “This is a way to come together and express what we appreciate about our community.”
At Robinson’s Pharmacy, window designer and buyer, Marcella Goodwin plans to string the Love Notes back-to-back on Valentine ribbon and hang them up in a window so they can be seen both inside and outside the store.
Business owner Dennis Thomas said he has given away so many of the Love Notes to participating merchants that Thursday, he had only three of the four designs left at Robinson’s.
“We thought of this too late to do it all over town, but next year, if people love it, we hope to expand it to Placerville Drive and Broadway,” said Mattson.
Love Notes are available now at participating downtown businesses. Ask for a Love Note, fill it out and leave it at the business. Then, watch love bloom in downtown Placerville.
