Future doctors, surgeons, therapists and other healthcare professionals received a helping hand from the Mercy Hospital of Folsom Auxiliary as auxiliary members handed out $1,000 scholarships.

Out of 21 students interviewed, 11 students from El Dorado Hills and Folsom high schools received money to continue their education, including Oak Ridge senior Cody Ellis, who thanked the auxiliary, his teachers, family and friends when he received his award. Ellis founded Oak Ridge’s Scrub Club, which connects students considering a medical career with healthcare professionals and also volunteers at Marshall Hospital’s emergency room in Placerville.

“Emergency medicine is pretty fascinating to me,” Ellis told Village Life during the awards luncheon at Serrano Country Club.

The 18-year-old said he hasn’t decided what type of medicine he will practice but confessed to being very interested in immunology because of its research potential and his fascination with pathogens.

He plans to major in biology before heading to medical school. Ellis has been accepted to several West Coast colleges, including BYU and University of California, Riverside, and said he’s still waiting to hear from other colleges.

Mercy Folsom President Michael Ricks congratulated all the students, calling them “the future of healthcare.”

Part of Mercy’s obligation to the community is to take an interest in and help students who want to pursue medical careers, according to Ricks.

“If we have the opportunity to help them now … maybe they will be endeared to us and remember (Mercy Folsom) when they’re ready to begin their careers,” Ricks said.

Ricks told the students they have chosen an “awesome profession,” one that gives back everything put into it and more.

Mercy Hospital of Folsom Auxiliary granted its first scholarships in 1976 and to date has given students more that $160,000 to pursue their medical educations.
