Five Oak Ridge High School sophomores dared El Dorado Hills Rotarians and guests to do “mighty things” at the club’s annual speech contest.
Carina Williams, Matt Landay, Alexa Hill, Garrett Brockschmitt and Emma Larsen, all 15, spoke about dreams, perseverance and hope at the annual event.
Landay’s speech retold the story of his brother, Marine Cpl. Jeff Landay, who suffered major injuries in Iraq but never gave up. He earned first place in the contest and moves on to the District 5180 semi-finals.
El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson, Hands 4 Hope founder Jennifer Bassett and Rotarian Noel Stack judged the El Dorado Hills Rotary speech contest, which was coordinated by Rotarian Kathe Russell. The theme for this year’s contest is “Dare Mighty Things,” Rotary District 5180’s latest motto.
Emma Larsen came in second and Carina Williams received third place recognition.
