This prestigious show is only presented every other year. This year’s show opens Tuesday, Aug. 19 and runs through Aug. 30. The Sacramento Fine Arts Center hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Tuesdays. The public is invited. An awards ceremony and reception is planned for Saturday, Aug. 30, 1-3 p.m.
Sixty-three paintings have been chosen by 39 artists from California and several other states by the juror of selection, Gerald Boyd, geraldboyd.com. The judge of awards is Clark Mitchell, cgmitchell.com. Both are distinguished award-winning pastelists.
Boyd is a distinguished pastelist from the Pastel Society of the West Coast (PSWC) and a signature member of the Pastel Society of America.
His career includes 42 years as a billboard painter. He briefly attended Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and also studied with Theodore Lukits prior to working for an advertising firm. He is best known for his figurative and portrait work. He is much sought after as a demonstrator, juror and judge.
Clark Mitchell is also a distinguished pastelist with the PSWC and master pastelist of the Pastel Society of America.
His career began as a youth in Colorado painting landscapes. After earning a bachelor’s degree in art he moved to northern California and studied at the Academy of Art University and also with several renowned painters. His work has been featured on the covers of American Artist, Southwest Art and the Pastel Journal. Also he is a popular demonstrator and workshop leader and resides in Sonoma County.
The Sierra Pastel Society, whose motto is “Bringing Brilliance to Art and Life,” was founded in 1999 to provide its members with learning opportunities and exhibitions and to create a greater awareness of pastels with art collectors and the general public. The organization is based in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California but draws members from across the United States and is a member of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS).
