Local photographer, Tony Mindling, is the featured artist for August at Art On the Divide Cooperative Gallery.
The gallery is hosting a reception for Mindling on Sunday, Aug. 12 from 2 to 5 p.m. Come meet the artist, enjoy some refreshments and see his amazing photographs and the artwork of the other talented gallery members.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s Mindling’s day job as a geologist took him for long periods on exploratory trips into Central Nevada. Subjected to the high desert in all its seasons, he gradually learned to celebrate the beauty of the natural world with his camera.
An exhibit of his black-and-white Central Nevada prints at the University of Nevada’s Desert Research Institute led to a long-time association as a photographer with the Nevada Historical Society in Reno.
Mindling has also taught photography with the Nevada Museum of Art and the Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno. He continues to share his enjoyment of photography through both field and computer-based workshops.
He said that until the digital revolution, he had always had a darkroom, cobbled together in kitchens, closets or basements.
“Although the odor of acetic acid can still bring back the memory of the pleasures of darkroom work, I have fully embraced digital photography. I believe I was pretty adept in the darkroom, but never before have I been able to produce images, black-and-white or color, which so fully represent how I see a subject,” Mindling said.
A new boost to his enthusiasm with photography has come from his recent association with the Art on the Divide Cooperative Gallery in Georgetown.
“I’m excited to have been invited to become part of this group of friendly, inspiring, and creative people, and to have been allowed to be the featured artist at the gallery for the month of August. I’m enjoying pulling together a representative selection of my favorites,” Mindling said.
Art on the Divide Gallery invites local artists who are interested in joining the cooperative to stop by and pick up an application.
The gallery is located at 6295 Main St. in Georgetown, between the fire station and the American River Inn. Summer hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Sunday.
