Placerville resident to perform at Three Stages

In its California debut, “Colors of Life” features a unique meeting of classical Indian dance beautifully choreographed by Meenakshy Bhaskar, a winner of the Young Artist Award from Singapore and Flamenco-based compositions by Roberto Corrias, a renowned Spanish guitarist and Carnatic Music of South India.

The production will feature key aspects of Indian Classical dance and chronicle the arduous spiritual journey taken by the gypsies from India all the way to Spain.

Placerville resident, Meenakshy Bhaskar capitalizes on her extensive background in several diverse dance styles. Along with Roberto Corrias, Meenakshy explores the rhythm and heartbeat of the gypsies as they stole their way through Europe.

This production is presented by Sacramento based South Asian Heritage Arts in North America (SAHANA), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting South Asian arts in the Greater Sacramento region.

This presentation will take place on Friday, Sept. 21 at Three Stages, at the Folsom Lake College Campus, 10 College Parkway in Folsom, at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets will be $25 for adults and $20 for seniors, student and children.

To purchase tickets online visit threestages.net or can be purchased at the door.

Bhaskar is the winner of the Young Artist Award in Dance from the National Arts Council, Singapore in 1996. She started her dance career as a prodigy in classical Indian dance, but went on to study modern dance at the University of Wisconsin.

She has won rave reviews with her overseas performances in Thailand, Brunei, Indonesia and India. She has also performed with ASEAN on several occasions representing her country. She has become known for her unique dance choreography rooted in the Bharat Natyam idiom while exploring western concepts and modern themes. Currently based in California where she runs a Bhaskar’s Arts Academy, she continues to stage dance productions in Singapore regularly.

Corrias received his degree in music with an instrumental specialization in guitar from the Italian Conservatory of Music. He refined his academic studies, initially, attending Castres University of Music in France, further perfecting his artistic specialization through collaborative encounters with Spain’s best known artists of classical and flamenco guitar in Seville, Cordoba, Granada, and Jerez.

Since 1978, Corrias has been studying, teaching, performing and carrying out extensive research on the artistic expression and language of guitar throughout the Mediterranean, expanding across the globe.

He has just released his third CD earlier this year. With numerous concerts behind him, Corrias continues to tour as a solo performer, and in artistic collaboration, throughout Europe, North Africa and more recently, America.
