Hard work and hours of preparation paid off for the Ponderosa High School Academic Decathlon team with a win in the annual competition that tested knowledge in 10 academic disciplines.

For Ponderosa this was the 21st consecutive victory scoring 37,412.50 points.

Oak Ridge High School placed second with 35,196.90 points, Union Mine High School was third with 32,576.10 points and El Dorado High School was fourth with 30,031.50.

Ponderosa placed first in the Super Quiz. Oak Ridge and Union Mine tied for second and El Dorado was third.

Highest scoring decathlete was Joey Costello. The top alternate was Samuel Joseph. Top essay was by Jordan Hyatt-Miller. Highest scoring speech was delivered by Brittany Morrison and best interview was by Mounika Bhaskara.

The topic of study for this year was Russia.

The scholastic scrimmage took place at Union Mine High School. The first part of the competition — personal interview, prepared and impromptu speech and essay writing — was on Jan. 30. On Saturday, Feb. 2 the students were tested in: Art — Russian Art and Architecture; Economics — the economy of Communist and Post-Communist Russia; Language and Literature — Boris Pasternak and the National Epic; Mathematics — Overview of Permutations and Combinations, Algebra, and Statistics; Music — Russian Music; Science — Space Exploration; and Social Science — Russian History; and the finale — the Super Quiz, made up of questions from the previous tests.

The starting line-ups for each team were made up of nine scholars: three A students, three B students and three C students known as Honor, Scholastic and Varsity divisons. Some teams also had alternates taking part.

Overall team scores were calculated using the top two individual scores from each grade division. The top three scorers in each grade division in each discipline earned gold, silver and bronze medals. The winning teams earned trophies and the winning team from El Dorado County will travel to the state tournament. The successful team at the state level will move on to the national competition.

Members of the Ponderosa team were: Honors — Joey Costello, Taylor Bartosh and Elizabeth Strutz; Scholastic — Morgan Henry, Jeremiah James and Russell Byrd; Varsity — Jacob Hansen, Kodee Hannah and Ryan Aguilar; and alternates — Tristan Melton, Erik Melton, Kelsea Maloney-Johnson, Samuel Joseph and Dylan Musgrove. The coach was Terri Kessler.

Oak Ridge competitors were: Honors — Kimberley Berg, Uma Dingankar and Shivani Sharma; Scholastic — Timothy Lo, Abraham Lewis and Mounika Bhaskara; Varsity — Landon Nagao, Wyatt Van Horn and Wesley Liu; and alternates — Bevyn Cassidy and Mihir Sharma. The coach was Jeff Hassian.

Representing Union Mine were: Honors — Aaron Below, Sean Fitch and Jordan Hyatt-Miller; Scholastic — Ericka Müehlenhaupt, Johnny D’Agostini and Brittany Morrison; Varsity — Michael Stevenson and Daniel Stevenson; and alternates — Dominic Sanquinetti, Olivia Marquardt and Amanda Fogelman. The coaches were Mike McGovern and Molly Smith.

Competing for El Dorado were: Honors — Jacquelyn Boals, Natalie Holmstedt and Dane Neves; Scholastic — Noah Cooke, Aaron Navarro and Audrey Armstrong; Varsity — Abby Finlayson and Arthur Ruiloba; and alternate — Lena Korkeila, Mackenzie Chopp and Mariah Alvarez. The coach was Tiffany Larson.

To produce the El Dorado County Academic Decathlon 150 volunteers were needed, plus support from businesses and donors.

Umpqua Bank and the Peek Family Fund at the El Dorado Community Foundation were gold sponsors.

Silver sponsors were Timothy Cary and Associates, DST Output, El Dorado Savings Bank and Surveyors, Architects, Geologists and Engineers.

Aborn Powers Inc., Parker Development Company and an anonymous contributor were bronze sponsors.

In-kind contributions came from Placerville Kiwanis and Minuteman Press.

Roy Malone acted as emcee and Rebecca Lizarraga gave a patriotic observance. Vicki Barber, El Dorado County Superintendent of Schools offered the welcome and Richard Esposito, publisher of the Mountain Democrat, moderated the Super Quiz.
