Postal Service employees from across the state are sharpening their knives and preparing to compete on Sunday, July 22 for a years’ worth of bragging rights and the title of 2012 State Fair Postal Service Chef Challenge Winner.
Nine teams of two will cook their way through an “Iron Chef”-like competition. A mystery ingredient must be incorporated into the dish.
All other ingredients will be provided by the fair and placed in shopping carts in front of the stage area. Competitors will have two hours to “shop” for ingredients, cook and serve a main dish, salad or dessert large enough to serve six people.
All rounds of competition will be held in the California Foodstyle Building in Expo Center, Building 2: round 1 – 11a.m., round 2 – 1:30 p.m., round 3 – 4:30 p.m. and final round – 7 p.m.
Participants in each of the three preliminary rounds will receive ribbons. The first place winners will continue on to the final round.
Judges will evaluate the competitors’ appearance and organizational skills, as well as flavor, texture, doneness and presentation of the finished dish. Samples will be handed out to audience members.
The 2012 California State Fair is to July 29 at 1600 Exposition Blvd. in Sacramento. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
