Holmes designs and sculpts her shadow sculptures using woven steel wire mesh as the medium. Each sculpture is powder-coated to protect the steel and to secure the form. The color of the powder coating is an additional design element.
She has had several mentors, artists in her family, who helped promote her passion for art, which began in childhood. She has taken art courses, classes and seminars through the La Quinta Arts Foundation, colleges and universities in California and Idaho and from artists in Idaho, Big Bear, La Quinta and Placerville.
Her art has been shown in galleries in Taos, New Mexico and in Palm Springs, Camino and Placerville and includes bronze sculptures, woven steel sculptures, paintings and pottery.
Of all of the art forms that she has worked with, Holmes said that sculpting has always been the art of her heart.
“I have loved sculpting since childhood,” she said.
Stop by for fun music and hors d’oeuvres May 18 from 5 to 9 p.m.
