Ruby Perez receives Hispanic Chamber scholarship

SACRAMENTO – The Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with William Jessup University, announced today that Ruby Perez of Placerville is the recipient of an annual $5,000 scholarship to use toward her education at William Jessup University in Rocklin.

“The Sacramento Hispanic Chamber is proud to partner with William Jessup University to offer this scholarship opportunity to Ruby Perez,” said Alice Perez (no relation), president and CEO of the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

“We hope that this scholarship brings Ruby closer to achieving her goal of obtaining her bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and one day fulfilling her dream of becoming a teacher,” Perez said.

Ruby has received over 60 awards for her academic achievements and was ranked among the top 30 students at Amador High School.

When she is not studying or playing sports, Perez uses her passion to teach others by tutoring her classmates and is currently a tutor to four young students with autism.

In recognition of her academic excellence and active involvement in the community, Ruby will be given a scholarship of $5,000 per year for up to four years to pursue her bachelor’s degree in liberal studies at William Jessup University. She hopes to one day become a teacher.

“Thanks to the chamber and William Jessup University, this scholarship will offer me the financial support I need to bring me closer to my dream of becoming a teacher one day,” Ruby said. “William Jessup is a very welcoming and supportive community that I am enjoying tremendously.”

The scholarship comes at a particularly important time for students who not only are faced with keeping their grades up, but also have to deal with how they will pay for their college tuition.

Ruby has a passion for teaching and helping others. Fluent in Spanish, she hopes to use her bilingual skills to make a difference in the lives of students — focusing her work on Hispanic communities.

William Jessup University is a private university located on an expansive, 128-acre campus in Rocklin and includes on-campus housing and extensive athletic facilities. William Jessup University offers a wide variety of degree opportunities, including bible and theology, biology, business administration, family and children’s ministry, English, history, intercultural studies, liberal studies (teacher education), math, music, pastoral ministry, psychology, public policy and youth ministry.

“William Jessup University appreciates the support and partnership with community groups, helping to ensure that young people like Ruby have opportunities to pursue higher education and reaching their educational goals,” said Vance Pascua, director of admissions.
