Have you been hearing more singing in the air lately? Well, you’re not going nuts.

Pablo Picasso once said, “To draw, you must close your eyes and sing.”

There’s been a lot of singing going on as artists from El Dorado County and nationally have been preparing their art pieces to enter into this year’s Mother Lode Show.

This free event, the 48th National Mother Lode Art Exhibit, will run Aug. 3-17  daily from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. There will be a reception on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 3 p.m. to chat with the artists and present awards.

The venue is the beautiful Placerville Shakespeare Club, 2940 Bedford Ave., just minutes from Main Street in Placerville. There is plenty of parking behind the club on Spring Street just north of Highway 50 or a short 10 minute walk from the Bell Tower on Main Street.

Calls to artists went out to hundreds of artists and art organizations as well as online calls to artists Websites.

This year more than 100 works of art of 55 artists will be on display. The show features diverse two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art from realism to abstract and experimental.

Art in a wide variety of media, in categories of seascape, landscape, portrait, still life, animals, miniature and experimental are all a part of this art show. Photography and digital art were added last year.

Before acceptance, each art piece is reviewed and juried into the show. This means the quality is high. Many of the artworks in the show are by local, state and national award-winning artists along with other very talented artists who have closed their eyes and sung.

This year’s juror was Ken Waterstreet. He is a California-based artist who has mostly worked in a realist style that usually employs a somewhat conceptual twist.

He is a graduate of California State University, Sacramento, and holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in art from Sac State.

Over the years, Waterstreet has produced a number of one-person exhibitions in New York, San Francisco and Sacramento. He has been included in many group exhibitions in the United States, Canada and Europe as well as being represented in a number of private and public collections.

Once the art pieces are juried into the show, they are judged. This year’s judge is D. Oldham Neath. Oldham Neath is the owner of Archival Framing and Gallery in Sacramento, and celebrated her 30th year in business in 2013.

She is KVIE-TV’s on-air art curator and one of the hosts on KVIE Arts Showcase on Tuesday evenings.

Oldham Neath was one of the creators of Sacramento’s Second Saturday Art Walk. Archival Framing regularly prepares paintings for shows at the Crocker Art Museum and local hotels and businesses.

“D” as she is known, actively supports the arts and works with artists through her framing and community involvement.

This is always an exciting time for the Placerville Arts Association (PAA). One of PAA’s primary goals is to promote visual arts in the community through art shows, exhibitions, art demonstrations, workshops, scholarships and art oriented field trips. PAA is very proud to sponsor this art event.

There will be a number of mini-workshops offered during the two weeks of the show. They usually last 2-4 hours and cost $30 each. Several of the workshops also require a materials fee. Twenty dollars of each $30 goes towards PAA’s scholarship program.

The workshops are: Smart Phone Photography, Basic Watercolor, Pet Portraits, Creative Watercolor (two days), Pastels, Scratchboard and Drawing is FUN.

These mini-workshops are conducted by local and national award-winning artists who are also PAA members. Call 530-676-3959 for more information or to sign up or visit the PAA Website at placervillearts.com. Class size is limited.

Sing along with PAA and come to the art show.
