Sutter’s Fort presents Christmas past

By From page B3 | December 07, 2012

To help get fort visitors in a festive holiday spirit, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park has two interactive and fun “Hands on History” events scheduled on one very special day in December.

On Saturday, Dec.8., fort visitors will step back in time to holidays past with festive, hands-on activities such as dipping candles, making cornhusk dolls and crafting holiday ornaments as part of special “A Simple Emigrant Christmas” activities.

Friends and families are encouraged to visit the fort to enjoy docents in period attire as they interpret and demonstrate a variety of early holiday traditions and cultural activities similar to what early emigrants did in the 1840s.

When darkness falls on Dec. 8, lending a bit of mystery to the fort, guests will see Sutter’s Fort in a new light — by candlelight.

Sutter’s Fort will offer evening tours by candlelight with guides leading small groups of visitors into the fort’s more intimate rooms for intriguing glimpses into the private lives of those who uprooted their families for a better life in early California.

Fort visitors will overhear conversations such as families discussing opportunity or possible devastation in their new homes, husbands debating with wives, mothers re-assuring their children about life in rough and tumble Sacramento and  tradesmen negotiating business — surrounded by the night sky allowing visitors to travel back in time as city lights fade from view.

Don’t miss the two “Hands on History” events happening at Sutter’s Fort SHP, 2701 L St. in Sacramento, on Saturday, Dec.8. “A Simple Emigrant Christmas” runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Candlelight Tours run from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Tickets for “A Simple Emigrant Christmas” are $7 per adult, $5 per youth (ages 6-17) and free for children 5 and under. Candlelight Tours are $17 per person.
