It’s a long drive from Stockton to Tahoe, but with author Todd Borg at the controls, it’s a fast one.
“Tahoe Trap,” Borg’s 10th and newest novel, takes the reader on an open throttle ride from a murder on the mountain roads of South Lake Tahoe to growing fields in Stockton and back again.
When 10 year old Paco Ipar witnesses the death of his foster mother, he becomes a target for two hired killers. Paco’s short life hasn’t been easy and his only source of help is Owen McKenna, the private investigator who is more comfortable with great Danes than with children.
For those who have grown to love McKenna and his great Dane, Spot, in Borg’s previous nine novels, you won’t be disappointed.
As in all Borg’s novels, you’ll probably learn something while being entertained with the action-packed story because Borg’s tails, set in Tahoe, take on topical issues in addition to delivering a rousing mystery.
“I just pick subjects that are interesting to me and consider which ones might work well in my story,” said Borg.
He’s explored such topics as autism, organ harvesting, art forgeries, wild mustangs, wildfires, avalanches and Washoe Indian legends, weaving them into his stories and educating his readers along the way.
Set in both the beautiful surroundings of Lake Tahoe and in the agricultural communities outside Stockton, “Tahoe Trap” informs the reader about farmers markets, the Basque people, fire ants and really hot peppers while taking them on a thrill ride of murder, kidnapping and danger. It also explores the plight of illegal immigrant children as portrayed by Paco.
“In Tahoe Trap, Paco’s knowledge about tomatoes and peppers revealed his intelligence, contrary to his own concept of himself,” said Borg, “so I included those subjects.”
Borg is well into the writing of his next book and the next addition to his Owen McKenna Tahoe series should be out in the summer of 2013.
“Tahoe Trap” and other Todd Borg mysteries are available at Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com and locally at the El Dorado Arts Council, 459 Main Street and at Placerville News Company, 409 Main St, Placerville.
