Teens can win a trip

“It is amazing to look back and say, I did that.” It has been two years since Amanda Fogelman hiked to the top of North Dome in Yosemite and helped build trails in Inyo National Forest.

“I’m so glad I got to experience (Epic Sierra) and I know a lot of people won’t do it or won’t think of it,” Fogelman said two years later.

Thanks to a generous gift from Royal Robbins, more low and middle income teens can attend an Epic Sierra Adventure this summer.

During April, teens from across the country can enter “My Epic Adventure” essay contest. Two winners will be selected and receive an all expenses paid 14-day Epic Sierra Adventure. The prize covers all trip fees, including outdoor activities, food, camp lodging, airfare (or gas money) to the Sacramento Airport, and trip gear to use and keep.

Epic Sierra introduces teenagers, ages 14-18, to a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. Activities include rafting the American River, backpacking in Yosemite and kayaking Lake Tahoe.

Teens give back where they recreate: they complete 15-hours of hands-on service projects and gain leadership skills. Participants work closely with staff from like-minded organizations including Friends of Inyo, the Mono Lake Committee, the Tahoe Resource Conservation District and the National Park Service and, in turn, get acquainted with mentors and careers in the conservation field.

Polly Dana’s son Henry attended an Epic Sierra trip in 2012.

“Thank you for Henry’s great Epic Sierra trip last summer. He had a great time, grew up, saw spectacular new things and experienced new challenges. I thank you and all the Epic staff for providing a great program,” Polly said.

All trips start and end in Coloma. Royal Robbins also has partial Epic scholarships for teens based on financial need.
